We love this title and this attitude. Jothy Rosenberg, a long time visitor to Spynergy — has written a new book. Who Says I Can't? is the incredible story of a two-time cancer survivor, amputee and entrepreneur who fought back, survived and thrived. After losing his leg to cancer as a youth, he went on to get a PhD in computer science, to author 2 technical books, to found 6 high tech companies, to ride in the Pan-Masscahusetts Challenge bike-a-thon supporting the Dana-Farber cancer institute 7 times, to swim 16 times from Alcatraz to San Francisco to support Boston Healthcare for the Homeless, and to participate in many other sports and fundraising activities. Eating Healthy…..our favorite 2 tips
Thought of the day: we've culled through dozens of so-called "eat healthy" tips on the Internet. Here are two of our favorites:
Remember, foods are not good or bad. Select foods based on your total eating patterns, not whether any individual food is "good" or "bad." Don't feel guilty if you love foods such as apple pie, potato chips, candy bars or ice cream. Eat them in moderation, and choose other foods to provide the balance and variety that are vital to good health,
Balance your food choices over time. Not every food has to be "perfect." When eating a food high in fat, salt or sugar, select other foods that are low in these ingredients. If you miss out on any food group one day, make up for it the next. Your food choices over several days should fit together into a healthy pattern.
Experience shows that severe and dramatic attempts at dieting are doomed. These are pragmatic guidelines, and concepts that seem workable in daily life.

Themed playlists, motivation and free rides
Spynergy likes living at the intersection of music, fitness and cycling. It's fun. Over the years, instructors have spiced their classes with musical "themes" to distract and entertain……to make the workout interesting and to make the workout fun. A few examples: Women with attitude, Sticks and Stones, St. Patricks Day, Sunshine, Stormy Weather, Halloween, and more……..
If you like music and can cook up a theme "playlist" of 10 songs or so — you are eligible to win three free rides. 3 playlists will be chosen (and played at Spynergy!!). Here's an example from Bill called "On the Road": Submit your
playlists to info@spynergywellesley.com
Every day is a winding road Sheryl Crow
Road Man Smash Mouth
Bright side of the road Van Morrison
Car Wheels on a Gravel Road Lucinda Williams
Middle of the Road Pretenders
Dirt Road Blues Bob Dylan
On the Road Again Katie Melua
Route 66 Depeche Mode
(I'm a) Road Runner Albert Lee Road Runner Country
Hit the Road Jack Buster Poindexter,
Thunder Road Bruce Springsteen
Another reason to eat healthy / eat well
Every day you make eating choices……right? Here is an article we love about eating a Mediterranean style diet — it lowers the incidence of depression. Mediterranean types don't starve themselves….no. They eat well! That's the good news. In addition to the heart benefits, you'll stay happier! Check this out: Mediterranean Diet May Help Prevent Depression. As we move further into the "eating" season, try waging the battle for quality……..as opposed to the much tougher battle of quantity. Eat better, even if you are eating more! Way easier said than done, of course. And of course: Exercise, exercise, exercise.

Indoor Cycling
At this point, you obviously know what a spin class is. What you may not know is that this group exercise has been around in various forms since 1987. Today roughly 2 million people participate in indoor cycling, or “spinning”, an increase of over 80% in the past 10 years. 72% of the 5,000 plus clubs tracked by IHRSA, the leading health club trade organization, provide spin classes, making it one of the most popular services offered. Let’s just say it’s big. Really big.
Yes, there is a lot of indoor cycling taking place, but almost all of it is in health clubs or other larger multi-purpose environments. Classes in those environments can sometimes be good, more often they are mediocre to bad. The bottom line is that most health clubs do not have the focus, the incentive or the time to spend making their spin classes great. We like to think spin classes are like wine…when they are good, they are really really good, but when they are bad, they can be really really bad. Spynergy cycling studios are about one thing: creating the best possible indoor cycling experience….period.
A Little History
The first Spynergy was started in a Chicago suburb in 2002 and has a successful 7-year operating history. Run by twin sisters (with a combined 8 young children between them) Spynergy Winnetka is a well established business that continues to grow and thrive. In February of 2005, two more siblings from the same family opened a studio in the Boston area. Spynergy Wellesley is modeled directly after its successful sister studio and has enjoyed the same outstanding success. Single purpose spin studio? Sounds like a ridiculously simple concept. Guess what, it works.
We’ve done this. We’ve launched successful studios. We’ve made the mistakes, we’ve seen what works and we’ve walked the walk. Not only that, we’ve refined and developed the model so it can be replicated by smart energetic people like you.

6 reasons a Spin® or cycling studio can compete (and beat) a traditional gym or health club
There are dozens of examples around the country of successful dedicated indoor cycling or Spin® studios. While there are differences in approach, pricing and style………these studios have survived, and thrived in the face of direct (usually lower-priced) competition from large "box gyms" and health clubs that offer spin as well as multiple other products. These studios are classic "niche" businesses. They are successful for their focus on some combination of the following factors.
1) Focussed Mission. A dedicated studio pays attention to the details and focuses on one thing: the best spin classes possible. Bikes, sound system, amenities, teachers………are the best available.
2) Convenience. A studio is single purpose, "in and out", simple, easy to reserve and participate.
3) Flexible payment. No complicated memberships. In a studio, you pay "per-class" and when you don't ride….you don't pay.
4) Easy reserve. No waiting in lines, no getting "shut out", no calling the night before to reserve. You can easily reserve online, show up 2 minutes before the class, and enjoy!
5) Community. A small intimate studio encourages sharing and interaction amongst riders if they so desire. Instructors and students interact to optimize fitness, growth and enjoyment.
6) The little things matter. Bike maintenance, quality sound, outstanding teachers, attention to detail, lighting, mirrors, equipment, announcing schedule changes and subs, amenitites
